Incorporating Client Protection into Technical Assistance for Financial Institutions

 The Smart Campaign will be conducting a training for technical assistance providers on how to work with financial services providers to enhance their client protection practices. The participants of this training will also learn about the Smart Campaign’s client protection tools, which are meant for an institution to use after evaluating how it applies the Client Protection Principles in its business.

Three Bosnian microcredit organizations receive Smart certificates for consumer protection compliance

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina (May 6, 2013) – On May 6, the Smart Campaign, in cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), member of the World Bank Group, presented certificates to microcredit organizations (MCOs) EKI, MI BOSPO, and Partner for being certified for achieving adequate levels of compliance in consumer protection.

New Client Protection Certification Program Sets the Bar for Microfinance Smart Campaign Announces First “Client Protection Certified” Institutions

Washington, DC (January 24, 2013) – As of today, the microfinance industry has new client protection standards and a Client Protection Certification Program aimed at retail financial institutions serving the world’s poor. The ambitious effort, created for and by the industry and managed by the Smart Campaign, represents an important milestone in the evolution of microfinance as a uniquely client-focused portion of the global financial sector. “There has been widespread demand for mechanisms that protect microfinance clients. This is the first program that verifies client protection publicly,” said Smart Campaign Managing Director Isabelle Barrès.

The Smart Campaign, SPTF, and Seal of Excellence: Joint Letter of Intent

Over the past two years, several initiatives have developed to evaluate the performance of MFIs along various social criteria. While this gives MFIs new tools for assessing and improving their performance, it also has the potential to confuse MFIs and investors. We are writing this letter to explain how our three initiatives — the Smart Campaign, the Social Performance Task Force and the Seal of Excellence for Poverty Outreach and Transformation in Microfinance – are working together to try to minimize confusion while increasing options for microfinance practitioners, investors, and other stakeholders.
