Sa-Dhan & the Smart Campaign Launch IFC-backed Monitoring Tool to Strengthen Consumer Protection

New Delhi, India, September 26, 2018 — Sa-Dhan and the Smart Campaign announced the launch of an online monitoring tool at the Sa-Dhan National Conference 2018, that allows Sa-Dhan to monitor consumer protection and over-indebtedness risk among its nearly 200 members, benefiting more than 30 million clients in India. The tool is a result of a collaboration between Sa-Dhan, the Smart Campaign, and Accion, and was developed with the financial and technical support of the International Finance Corporation (IFC). IFC is a part of the World Bank Group and is the world’s largest development finance institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets, in particular the microfinance industry. Over the years, IFC has focused on introducing best practices in consumer protection and the Monitoring Tool is aimed at enabling greater transparency in the Indian microfinance sector.

Tala and the Smart Campaign Partner on Digital Client Protection

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 18, 2018 -Tala, the leading consumer lending app in emerging markets, and the Smart Campaign, a global initiative to promote strong financial client protection for low-income clients housed at the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion, announced today a partnership on digital client protection research.

Smart and Tala recently conducted a client protection research assessment, which consisted of extensive interviews and site visits with Tala’s operations in Kenya to establish best practices in consumer protection for digital lenders. Based on the findings from the assessment with Tala and research with other providers, Smart will release industry standards for digital lenders in 2019. The success of new standards for digital lending depends on the willingness of industry leaders like Tala to be transparent and committed to client protection practices.

New Tool Release at Sa-Dhan Annual Conference

September 19-20, 2018

The Smart Campaign will be attending the Sa-Dhan Annual Conference in New Delhi, India to unveil a new client protection tool developed in partnership with the Sa-Dhan association of community development financial institutions. This new tool will allow the association to monitor its members to ensure compliance with its Code of Conduct, as well as collect information about over-indebtedness risks for clients at member institutions.

Smart Campaign Reaches Milestone with 100 Certifications in Financial Consumer Protection

The certification of 100 financial service providers, collectively serving more than 42 million low-income clients worldwide, marks major achievement for financial inclusion.

Washington, D.C., May 15, 2018 – The Smart Campaign, the leading industry voice on financial consumer protection, housed at the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion, announced today that 100 financial service providers (FSPs) have attained Smart Certification, a landmark achievement in responsible financial inclusion.

The Smart Campaign works globally to create an environment in which financial services are delivered safely and responsibly to low-income clients. The Campaign launched the certification program in 2013 as a way for FSPs to align their policies and practices with industry-accepted Client Protection Principles, which articulate standards for product design and delivery, prevention of over-indebtedness, transparency, responsible pricing, treatment of clients, data privacy, and complaint resolution. In just five years of offering Smart Certification, 100 FSPs have successfully undergone the rigorous certification process, resulting in greater protection for more than 42 million low-income clients globally.

Webinar: Responsible Digital Credit

This webinar will feature CFI Fellow John Owens and Smart Campaign Senior Director Alex Rizzi. Our conversation will highlight the risks that digital credit consumers face, using the Smart Campaign Client Protection Principles as an organizing framework; identify existing best practices and standards for responsible digital credit; and provide recommendations on how to best navigate the intersection of digital financial services and consumer protection issues.

2018 International Conference on Responsible and Inclusive Finance

March 21-22, 2018 

The Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR) is hosting the 2018 International Conference on Responsible and Inclusive Finance on March 21st and 22nd in Kigali, Rwanda. With support from the SEEP Network and the Smart Campaign, this event is expected to give participants an opportunity to learn about strategies, successes and challenges of the Rwandan Financial Inclusion agenda and also provide a forum for discussions of best practices globally with respect to responsible inclusive finance, and an emphasis on client protection and education.

Smart Campaign in Ghana

November 6-9, 2017 – Accra, Ghana
The Smart Campaign travels to Ghana this fall for two major industry events: the annual Mastercard Foundation Symposium on Financial Inclusion Symposium and the Campaign’s own convening focused on client protection in Ghana. Both events will focus on keeping clients at the center of national financial inclusion efforts. Together with other industry leaders, we will reflect on progress to expand and deepen client protection in financial inclusion efforts, explore what remains to be done, and plan for how to get there.
