Certification Standards

Standards_cover_1
Certification standards represent the standards that clients should expect to receive when doing business with a financial institution.

The Client Protection Certification standards describe where the microfinance industry sets the bar in terms of client protection. To be certified, a financial institution (FI) needs to comply with the indicators corresponding to the 25 adequate standards of care for client protection described in the downloadable standards document.

The Certification program represents the output of several years of industry collaboration and input, managed by the Smart Campaign. Since June 2010 the Smart Campaign has been working with the microfinance industry through a Certification Task Force of over 30 experts representing various stakeholders, to develop the program. A technical subcommittee of that task force (composed primarily of the specialized microfinance rating agencies) has worked intensively during that time to develop and test the standards themselves.
