What is a Smart-Certified Assessor?

Smart-Certified Assessors have successfully completed an intensive Smart Assessor training and conducted an in-depth institutional client protection assessment with an already Smart-Certified Assessor. Smart-Certified Assessors are independent from The Smart Campaign, but maintain their certification by completing the following set of responsibilities:

Profile of Smart-Certified Assessors

• Experience conducting institutional assessments, preferably focused on social performance or other non-financial aspects
• Experience with social surveys and interviewing, preferably both the design and implementation of surveys, but at the very least significant experience conducting interviews
• Good cross-cultural skills, humility, openness to learning a new methodology, and to learning from the practitioners interviewed
• Good writing skills; experience with report creation
• Familiarity with microfinance
• Familiarity with the primary ratios and financial statistics used by MFIs for reporting purposes
• Familiarity with indicator/performance measure design and testing preferred

Responsibilities of Smart-Certified Assessors

• Conduct at least 1 in-depth assessment per year in order to maintain certification
• Inform The Smart Campaign of any client protection assessments being conducted
• Share all assessment reports with The Smart Campaign (kept confidential within The Smart Campaign)
• Conduct assessments with at least one other Smart-Certified Assessor or Trainee
• Complete assessment reports within one month of conducting an in-depth assessment
• Endorse The Smart Campaign
• Stay up-to-date with developments in The Smart Campaign

Smart-Certified Assessors
